In September, Letovo Junior students all took part in our school-wide diagnostic English tests. According to the results, each of the students was placed into groups that best reflect their skills and abilities. Below, you can find descriptions of all English levels at Letovo Junior.
Some of the main goals of the first quarter were to foster collaborative learning, develop self-organization skills and improve reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. We have already started promoting a love for reading by sending students home with literature so that they can make English a part of their everyday lives and read more for pleasure.
For the October break, students will be sent home with reading material to ensure that they continue to read on the holidays. They are also encouraged to read any books in English that you have at home.
Year 1
Year 1 students were having so much fun interviewing each other about their families! And after the second unit, they are experts on people and places in the school.
Year 1 students enjoyed doing a word building task. They were building words from the letters they had learnt. They needed to find out who was the fastest and the most professional builder.
Mr Dylan’s and Mr Sam’s students were learning about different genres of text for reading and writing. They looked at postcards and letters as well as diaries to tell what exciting things people can talk about. Understanding the differences will help them to write more in the future.
Year 2
Year 2 students are great reporters, quite able to interview their classmates. And the difference between this-that-these-those? Piece of cake for us!
Students learned the difference between excuses and challenges. They then applied their knowledge into a funny story about not doing homework.
Year 2 read a story about friends at school sharing their ‘show and tell' in class we then had our own ‘show and tell' with some very interesting items including Pokemon cards, special pens, and a summer soap!
To celebrate our writing, students presented their stories during ‘Author Spotlight' - this was a great opportunity to share feedback with each other and improve our future stories!
Year 2 students were busy developing their reading and critical thinking skills through story work. After reading a story together, they discussed its main ideas and also found cause and effect in the story. Then working in pairs, they sequenced the story from beginning to end and told it in their own words — showing great teamwork and comprehension skills!
Students read four short texts about birthday celebrations in different countries. They learned how to compare and contrast the ways people celebrate around the world. Then, working in groups, they searched for birthday-related words and phrases. Finally, they used this vocabulary to compare their own birthday celebrations with the traditions of the country they chose.
Year 3
Year 3 students are great experts in suggesting the sites to see in Moscow, what to do with friends and where to eat.
English lessons are not just about learning the words and the rules, they are also about using your language while playing games and working in teams! In October 3rd graders tried their best to win in a board game on everyday activities! They practised the rule and learned a new vocabulary, like "miss a turn" or "move forward". Speaking English is cool!
Children explored the purpose of food and the importance of a balanced diet. They discussed what food is for and learned about healthy eating habits. The students then created and shared their own healthy recipes with classmates. The most popular recipe was a delicious milkshake made with various ingredients, while the most unusual was called "Green Goddess!"
Mr Dylan’s students were looking at various texts and genres, story mountains for retelling familiar stories, different celebrations, how to give and follow clear and concise instructions and key features of planning an event. All of these skills can be used in real life and can help us in so many ways!
Year 4
Year 4 students were very busy searching for cause and effect in a story. They were also polishing up their grammar tenses to be able to write amazing stories.
Year 4 students demonstrated their oracy skills by presenting posters about traditional Russian food. The students were actively engaged not only when presenting their own posters, but also while listening to their groupmates and asking questions. It helped foster confidence in speaking and presenting in front of an audience.
Year 4 started the topic of "Space exploration"and discovered a lot of fascinating things! For instance, students have compared the planets in a Planet Battle and then had a vote on the best planet in the Solar System. In Year 4 the winner was Mars and Year 5 chose the Earth as the champion.
Students look at cause and effect in reading and have practiced different grammatical tenses to help them better understand what they read and hear as well as to improve what they say and write. We have also been learning about interviewing others and talking about peoples' dreams.
Year 5
Students read an adventure novel and recreated one scene from the book into a comic. This example is the excellent work of Polina from English A.
We have been busy learning a lot since September from fables and morals to thick and thin questions—to make our writing and speaking more detailed—to debates and biographies ! I has been great to see all of the various topics that we are able to cover in grade 5 !
